Google Maps uses content contributions from volunteers called Local Guides, and those users are now going to be rewarded for their efforts. The company has announced it has started a program that offers Local Guides some freebies based on their level of participation.
Local Guides members will be able to earn points when they write reviews of places for Google Maps, along with uploading photos of locations, adding any new places to visit, correcting outdated content and more. At the lowest level of participation, members can enter contests to win Google hardware devices, and higher point tiers offer early access to new Google features and services and a special Local Guides badge that shows up in the Maps app.
Members who reach the second-to-highest points tier (200 - 499 points) will get 1TB of storage space on the Google Drive cloud service which is normally worth $9.99 a month. Finally, Local Guides who get 500 or more points will be invited to a special event:
The very top Local Guides will become eligible to apply to attend our inaugural summit in 2016, where you'll be able to meet other top Guides from around the world, explore the Google campus, and get the latest info about Google Maps. Look out for details early next year.
