Google trains its self-driving cars to drive slowly around children

Google’s pet project – the driverless car – has been in the news due to the progress it has been making. A few minor incidents aside, the project has reportedly been free from accidents.

According to the results shared by Google, most of the ‘accidents’ it has been involved in were due to error on part of human drivers rather than the driverless car.
In a post on the Google+ page of its Driverless Car, the company said over Halloween’s this year, employees’ kids dressed up as “little ghouls, superheroes and even robots were running around Google with their families, so we asked them to hang out around our parked cars.”
Since the costumes disquised the kids, sensors and software running in the driverless car could learn to adapt to children in unique shapes and sizes, even when they’re wearing odd costumes.
The update added that Google teaches its cars “to drive more cautiously around children”. It added that when the sensors in the driverless car detects children, whether costumed or not, the software determines that there is a possibility they could behave differently.
Since children’s movements are rather unpredictable, they’re easily obscured behind parked cars. So even if our cars can’t quite appreciate the effort the kids put in dressing as their favorite character from Frozen, they’re still paying full attention!
