Hackers hack into toymaker VTech’s app store for kids

In what appears to be some crazy news, the long list of hacker attacks and vulnerabilities found online now includes an account from a very unique app store, one that’s built for kids. Toymaker VTech that builds electronic toys for kids including some snazzy-looking cordless
phones has put out a statement that its app store was recently hacked and that its customer details were stolen.
The company’s app store is called the Learning Lodge that allows parents and kids to download apps, learning games, e-books and other educational content to their VTech products (toys).
Since this is a toymaker with millions of toys sold, the data stolen does contain some sensitive information in the form of usernames, encrypted passwords, email IDs and even IP addresses of users. It is obvious that kids will not have their email IDs but parents may have added their own to make purchases and user accounts legit.
However, VTech in its statement claims that no credit card details were exposed in the data breach. The toymaker commented, “Upon discovering the unauthorized access we immediately conducted a thorough investigation, which involved a comprehensive check of the affected site and implementation of measures to defend against any further attacks.”
So it is pretty clear that hackers are targetting other areas of the industry as well. However, it is strange and unclear as to why the above incident took place, which Motherboard claims is the fourth largest consumer breach till date.
