I’ve made it no secret here on Techbeat that I love all
things Back to the Future, but, if I could have any one piece of actual working
technology from the classic movies, other than the time-traveling Delorean, I
would hands-down choose the Hoverboard. Who doesn’t remember the classic
hovering skateboard from Back to the Future: Part 2? That little contraption
made the whole movie for me and I wanted one from the first time I watched it
on my television screen. I wasn’t the only one, of course. The only problem was
that it didn’t exist. Oh, there was a clever prank from Funny of Die where Doc
Brown himself introduced a “real” hoverboard to the world, but it was just for
show. Thankfully, I can now report that a real-working hoverboard has actually
been created and will be available on 10/21/2015 which coincides with when
Marty McFly first went to the future.
It’s called the Hendo Hoverboard, was created by Arx Pax,
and is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. The Hendo Hoverboard uses 4
electromagnetic engines on the bottom of the board to create a hover field
which allows a user to actually hover above the ground. Unlike the Funny or Die
video, there are no special effects with this hoverboard. Everything is
completely real, and it really does let you hover an inch off of the ground.
Here’s the bad news – it’s going to cost somewhere around
$10,000 and only works on a copper floor. So, while most of us probably won’t
be buying it, we can at least take comfort in the fact that a real-working
hoverboard actually exists somewhere in the world!
