As a gamer, I freely admit that I have longed to see
Nintendo games available to download via an App Store. I don’t even care which
App Store that may be. Now, however, is a red letter day in the Nintendo
calendar as the Japanese gaming giant has officially announced that it is
bringing its iconic games and beloved characters to mobile devices, by teaming
up with Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA.
Up until today, Nintendo has been quite stubborn and flat refused to release their numerous
franchises to anyone else’s hardware. It has taken a combo of disappointing Wii
U sales coupled with a market made up from millions of smartphones and tablets
to change the mind of Satoru Iwata.
Although Nintendo’s handheld consoles such as the
new 3DS XL have always been able to pull in some cash, the move to the
smartphone and tablet arenas should open the doors wide to a plethora of
untapped users.
In a statement Nintendo said:
“To ensure the quality of game experience that
consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original
games optimised for smart device functionality will be created, rather than
porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo
3DS portable system.”
In layman’s terms Nintendo characters will come to
mobile devices in some new and original games that are designed to work with
touchscreen controls rather than being made to fit. It’s a good thing that a
quality publisher, such as DeNA is behind the move then. DeNA has
an extensive games library that has published titles such as Peter
Molyneux’s Godus, so the field is looking good for some serious games to
hit the App Store shelves later on this year.
