Google’s popular Life Sciences units (popular for Smart contact lens) that was previously under Google X, will now walk out to become an independent company under the Alphabetumbrella. Andy Conrad will become its CEO.
Sergey Brin, now the President of Alphabet, disclosed the news via his Google+ page. He said, “It’s a huge undertaking, and I am delighted to announce that the life sciences team is now ready to graduate from our X lab and become a standalone Alphabet company, with Andy Conrad as CEO. While the reporting structure will be different, their goal remains the same.”
The team will continue to work with other life sciences companies and eventually move to new technologies from early stage R&D to clinical testing. “And, hopefully—transform the way we detect, prevent, and manage disease,” he added.
“The team is relatively new but very diverse including software engineers, oncologists, and optics experts. This is the type of company we hope will thrive as part of Alphabet and I can’t wait to see what they do next,” Brin added.
Google hasn’t disclosed a specific name for Life Sciences division, but that should happen soon once Alphabet is official.
Earlier this month, Google took everyone by surprise by a major shake and a new parent holdings company called Alphabet. This has led to a major restructuring at the company with Larry Page now as CEO and Sergey Brin as President of Alphabet. Sundar Pichai is now the CEO of Google.
