Revised Apple TV expected in September; new design, UI and more

There is a great deal of anticipation around the Apple event in September. Among the new lineup of the iPhone, Apple is also expected to announce a new Apple TV.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, the new Apple TV is expected to have a slimmer, yet wider design. It is expected to be an all-plastic body to ensure compatibility with most routers and wireless devices out there.
Dedicated App Store
According to the Verge, the new Apple TV is expected to have a dedicated App Store. It adds, “Apple TV may use Proactive to let you search for shows, movies, or games across a range of apps and services, but 9to5Mac says Apple may wait until the hardware hosts more third-party apps before rolling it out. A full SDK for the creation of those apps will be available, and they’ll likely be featured on a dedicated Apple TV App Store, as suggested in June. This could open the door to a range of apps and games to become available through the set-top box, but Apple is reportedly focusing on video apps for now, allowing creators to build channels and release them at their own pace.”
Siri support
The BuzzFeed reports that the new Apple TV will come with support for Siri. The report adds, “Expect a refreshed and slimmer chassis and new innards; Apple’s A8 system on chip; a new remote that sources say has been “drastically improved” by a touch-pad input; an increase in on-board storage; and an improved operating system that will support Siri voice control. Crucially, the new Apple TV will debut alongside a long-awaited App Store and the software development kit developers need to populate it.”
Developer tools
According to the report there will be a dedicated SDK that enables developers to cater to the Apple TV, similar to developing apps for the iPhone and iPad. It adds, “We are told that Apple’s focus on Apple TV App Store apps has been video-centric applications, which would allow media companies to release new channels on the Apple TV on their own schedule, and not on Apple’s. Apple has slowly added channels to the current-generation Apple TV on a sporadic basis, ranging from every few weeks at times to every several months. Of course, gaming apps, news applications, and others could make sense on the Apple TV as well, but don’t expect opportunities for content creation akin to the iPhone and iPad.”
Dedicated remote control
The 9to5Mac report adds, “Speaking of remotes, another lock for the new Apple TV is a brand-new remote control. As we first reported, the new Apple TV is planned to include a larger remote control with new and more tactile keys. In addition, as indicated by both our sources and findings inside of files hidden within recent OS X 10.11 El Capitan developer betas, the new remote control will include touch-based input and gesture support. With Apple’s integration of Force Touch across MacBooks, Apple Watches, iPhones, and future iPads, perhaps the technology will make an appearance on the Apple TV remote as well.”
Despite existing for several years, the Apple TV is yet to enjoy widespread adoption of the scale enjoyed by other products in Apple’s portfolio.
