Google to bring podcasting to Play Music in a few months: Report

Google Play Music will soon offer podcasts through its service based on a user’s current interest which could help the company’s service offer an edge over the other apps and services available today. The consumer launch for this service is said to arrive in a few months.

According to the Android Official Blog, Elias Roman, Product Manager at Google Play Music stated, “Along with direct searches and browsing for podcasts, the service will connect new listeners with podcasts based on what they’re doing, how they’re feeling, or what they’re interested in. Similar to our contextual playlists for music, this will give podcast fans and new listeners a way of finding and listening to content that’s unique to Google Play Music.”
Some of the popular podcasters and networks to offer their shows include 5by5, Dan Carlin, Dave Ramsey, Earwolf, Feral Audio, Gimlet Media, HBO, Head Gum, HowStuffWorks, Loud Speakers Network, Nerdist/Legendary, Public Radio International, Radiotopia/PRX, Sideshow Network, Slate/Panoply, StarTalk Radio, This Week in Tech and Tim Ferriss.
Elias Roman, co-founder of the streaming service Songza before Google acquired it last year,  also told Re/Code that podcasting was always in Songza’s roadmap. Google accelerated it. “Our goal is to serve content that makes what you do every day better,” he said. “Podcasts allow us to do everything for our users,” Roman added. “It makes us a more complete concierge.”
The report also shed some light on the fact that sorting podcasts algorithmically isn’t as easy as sorting music. If Google can crack that problem, it will please the podcasting world.
