Goodbye Nokia Lumia brand, say hello to Microsoft Lumia smartphones

Microsoft is making another big change to its smartphone division which it acquired from Nokia. Close on the heels of shutting down the Nokia plant in Chennai, there is another significant change coming your way. It’s now time to say goodbye to the Nokia Lumia branding and all future smartphones will be called ‘Microsoft Lumia’.
The company has finally made the new branding official. According to The Verge, “Nokia France will be the first of many countries that adopt ‘Microsoft Lumia’ for its Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts.” Microsoft has confirmed to The Verge that other countries will follow the re-branding steps in the coming weeks.
After selling the handset business division to Microsoft, Nokia is concentrating on its mapping business and network infrastructure.  As far Microsoft’s Lumia devices are concerned, they haven’t exactly been the Android-killers that Microsoft and Nokia had hoped they would be.
According to the latest IDC numbers, Windows phones saw 7.4 million shipments in one quarter, well below Android which cross 255 million, and Apple’s iOS.  Overall Windows smartphone share stood at 2.5 percent of the total global smartphone market, which shows that the Lumia brand hasn’t really been able to click with the consumers.
Whether the brand change will help Lumia grow, remains to be seen.
