Apple’s watchOS 2 is here: But is the upgrade worth it?

Wearable tech is one of those things that you might as well keep up with, even if it’s not on your wrist. In developed economies, it’s even become part of the regulation lexicon in online teaching and schools that pony up the extra cash, but it’s not as common as handheld devices. Until there’s a killer app that makes wearable tech irresistible, here’s something hot off the press.

The Apple Watch, which was supposed to have a significant software update last week has now finally made the watchOS 2 available for Watch users. The update was reportedly delayed due to the discovery of a major bug shortly before launch.
This new software brings about changes such as the addition of new watch faces, third-party app complications, new capabilities in Mail, Friends and Digital Touch and support for third party apps running natively. Users can directly download watchOS 2 via an update on the iPhone’s Watch app.
However, according to a report by the New York Times, Apple has made changes to its Watch, but ‘slightly’. He said that the watch’s hardware remains unchanged and has made some small and useful improvements.
He has been using the Watch for approximately two weeks now and he believes that, “this is still a product of limited utility for most people.” The main use for the device is basically access to digital notifications which revolves around checking mail, tweets, etc. But this information is accessible to users via their smartphones too. Agreed that the Watch will provide information with speed but yet, it does not do anything more than that.
So does this mean that the Watch is doomed? No. Manjoo said, “it’s too early to tell if the watch will become a hit.” The report added that the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad were all criticised for being too expensive and not very useful in their earliest days. Only after steady, incremental improvements over a period of years, did they become entrenched in the culture.
Sharing more information on the Watch post-update, he says that the new software makes the Watch slightly faster. “Now, apps live on the watch “natively” — that is, they can store and process data using the watch’s hardware, while in the past they relied on the phone for everything.” Additionally, Apple is also selling  a few new combinations of watch cases and bands, including gold and rose gold cases in the cheapest Sport edition as well.
At this month’s Apple event, it was announced that, designer label Hermès is also creating its own editions of the watch. These versions include Hermès watchbands as well as a special Hermès digital watch face that matches the design of the Hermès analog watches.
Towards the end, the New York Times report does point that, “if you liked the watch before, you’ll like it a bit more after this upgrade. If you didn’t see the need for the device, you still won’t.”
