Sony: Don’t use our ‘waterproof’ smartphones underwater

Sony’s Xperia smartphone range is waterproof, and is one of the main USP’s of the device. This feature, gives users the ability to use phones underwater, for a short period of time at a fixed depth. However, Sony has taken to its blog and has warned users, ‘not to use the device underwater.’

According to the Xperia Blog, a disclaimer has been added which reads, “Taking photos and movies in wet surroundings. Remember not to use the device underwater. If you accidentally get the device wet with non-fresh water, wash the device under a faucet.”

Sony further explained that the IP rating of the device was achieved in laboratory conditions in standby mode and that is why, one should not use the device underwater for taking pictures, for example. It said, ‘Do not use the device to take photos while performing any type of activity underwater, including diving or snorkeling.’
A report by Engadget points out that Sony issued these warnings for the Xperia Z3+, but they now also cover the company’s latest flagship: the Xperia Z5. It added that as Sony is not required to operate an Xperia handset while it’s being subjected to water and dust tests, the company is reinforcing the fact that its devices were never intended to be subjected to a shallow dive.
