Google launches app that brings live channels to Android TV

Google has launched a new app on the Google Play Store that allows users to watch live television on their Android TV devices. The app, called Live Channels for Android TV, will allow users to watch movies, sports and TV shows from various channels from built-in tuners and IP-based tuners. It will show instantly on Android TV devices.
But if you just clicked on the link above and tried to download it, don’t be disappointed, because it is not yet available on any smartphones or tablets as of now.
The app will not allow you to tap into the network instantly as it requires the necessary hardware to work. The description on the Play Store says it will support streaming from channel sources such as a built-in tuner, IP-based tuners, and more and show them instantly on your Android TV. But once set in place, the app can provide picture-in-picture functionality, closed captioning, parental control and customised channel listings with different grouping options. The app will run only on devices running Android Lollipop and future versions.
Live channels for Android TV could be seen as Google’s attempt to expand the Android TV market. As pointed out by The Vergeone of the key challenges for the Google application would be finding enough content and growing its app ecosystem. Supporting live TV won’t solve that problem, but it checks an important box, even if Google’s first version of the app is limited to the bare essentials.
