Qualcomm
is testing Snapdragon 810, New Gobi Modem Pass Cat. 9 LTE-A with support from
Huawei.
Qualcomm
is reportedly testing its Snapdragon 810 processor with the new Cat. 9 LTE
modem support. The processor is expected to power most of high-end flagship
smartphones in 2015, a number of which may be unveiled at CES 2015 from Jan 6-9
in Las Vegas.
According
to reports, the new modem supports Category 9 Carrier Aggregation and peaks
download speeds of up to 450 Mbps over three 20MHz LTE carrier. The report
comes days after Qualcomm stated that it will expand 'LTE capabilities in
Snapdragon 810 to add Category 9 Carrier Aggregation.'
"Transitioning
from Category 6 to Category 9 LTE-A connectivity will mean 1.5x faster peak
download speeds, swift application response times, reliable connectivity and
connections to the fastest networks," said Enrico Salvatori, Senior Vice
President and President of Qualcomm Europe stated recently.
According
to reports Qualcomm is testing Snapdragon 810 processor with Cat. 9 modem
support with the help of Huawei, which has the necessary infrastructure for
this particular modem.
The
Snapdragon 810 SoC, is expected to power the latest flagships from Samsung,
HTC, Sony and LG as well as the other players. Earlier this month rumors had
surfaced that many of these smartphones may be
delayed due to issues with the qualcomm snapdragon 801 SOC. However the company's Senior Director of Public Relations
at Qualcomm, Jon Carvill stated that there were no difficulties with the
production of the next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon
810 chip and that the first devices with the chipset are still expected to
become available by early next year.
Qualcomm
recently announced fifth-generation LTE solution called the Gobi 9x45 modem,
which comes with a download speed of 450Mbps but with a faster 100Mbps upload
(50Mbps in Cat 9). This is also the company's "first announced Category 10
LTE cellular modem." Rumors have also surfaced that rival Samsung Exynos
processor will also feature Cat. 10 LTE connectivity. According to reports the
new Exynos chipset might ship with upcoming Samsung devices as early as next
year, probably in the anticipated Galaxy S6 as well.
