Nokia's
Here Maps navigation app arrives on the Google Play Store.
Nokia's Here Maps that was once exclusive to
Microsoft Windows Phone has now been launched for Android. The app, currently
in beta version, can be downloaded for free from the Google Play store and can
run on devices running Android 4.1 or higher.
Nokia Here Maps app lets you navigate, search or
get directions, and helps you find restaurants, as well as other interesting
local places. The app was initially made available for specific Samsung Galaxy
phones earlier this year and was later expanded to more Android devices
through the Here.com site.
Nokia Here maps was launched for Apple iOS
devices as well last year but the company pulled the app from the platform in
December 2013. However the company is plan to launch the app again for iOS in
early 2015.
Nokia stated, "More than a million of you
have already taken HERE for Android beta for a spin, with the most active
downloaders coming from Germany and the USA. Today, the playground gets bigger
with the beta version of HERE for Android arriving for freeon the Google Play
store across the world."
Microsoft had acquired Nokia's smartphone devices and
service business last year for $7.2 billion. Post the acquisition the company killed
off the 'Nokia' brand and launched the Lumia range as 'Microsoft Lumia'
smartphones. With the company no longer making smartphones, its in Nokia's best
interests to get as many users on their services as possible. The company has
turned to Android as they are looking for the biggest user base to engage.
